Review: Erin by Tess Mackenzie

I’ve started actually using my Goodreads account, and so I thought I’d mirror reviews here. Here’s the first:

So, this is not a story I would have picked out for me, based on the shopping-list. It’s about a lesbian couple, which is fine, though not my thing, and it centers around the kink of anal sex. Which… Well, I’ve written about it, and it’s something intriguing, sure, but it’s not my kink of choice. (Don’t know what that is, exactly, but you know what I mean.) The thing, is, I love Tess Mackenzie’s stories. They’re erotic, sure, but they’re about the people, and that’s why I read “Erin” (and its sequels), and that’s why I loved it. The two main characters, Erin and Lauren… Well, yeah. They’re both women. (Actually, Lauren is bisexual, not that it matters in this story so much.) And Erin has a thing for anal sex — particularly analingus. And the story flows out from there…. but honestly? It’s about their insecurities, and their love for each other, and the push-me-pull-you that those two things — combined with their desires — put them through. Is it sexy? Hell yeah. But mostly, I found myself falling in love a bit with these two slightly neurotic, sweet, very human creatures, and enjoyed the hell out of the short trip they took me on (and the subsequent trips as well).

You can find the story (and its two sequels, “Erin’s Anniversary,” and “Erin’s Birthday” here:

New Book Trailer – Juliet Takes Off

Sorry I’ve been non-present — school year beginning and…

And I have a new story — the next of my Juliet stories. Which you folks helped us choose the cover for!

😀

And it’s almost ready to be released, and I’ve spent the morning listening to the audiobook (voiced again by the wonderful Mary Cyn), and I’m very, very excited.

So here’s a sneak preview of the audiobook:

Sexual initiation (Audiobook/Ebook Trailer)

And for those of you who like reading to be… you know… reading, here’s the words:

If anything ever felt like a sexual initiation, it was that first time that Ken ate me. […] Before he’d even made it all of the way up my thigh, I could already tell that the trip that his tongue, teeth, lips, and fingers were going to send me on was going to be way beyond my realm of experience.

Stout Cortez first seeing the Pacific had nothing on this.

Trying to talk about sex is funny: using words to describe experiences that are (for me, at least) intensely non-verbal. From the moment that Ken’s lips touched my lips, the whole memory is a wash of sensory impressions. Pulling. Friction. Wetness. Pressure, building steadily. Heat.

I can’t tell you what he did that first time, or how he did it. Later experiences, sure, maybe — I can at least try.

All I know is that the whole time-stopped, earth-moved thing? It’s real.

I know this too: I had brought myself to hundreds or maybe even thousands of orgasms before Ken touched my cunt that night.

But that was the very first time that I experienced an orgasm as the Little Death, the way the Elizabethans called it. The French still call it that, or so Jonathon tells me.

When I re-inhabited my body, I was sprawled on the sofa, my legs splayed over Ken’s shoulders.

He was kissing his way leisurely up my belly….

Let me know what you think; I’ll let you know when it’s available!

When You Can’t Run, You Crawl. When You Can’t Crawl, You Find Someone to Carry You.

The (female) voice of my audiobooks is producing a burlesque show about FIREFLY, for god’s sake. How cool is that?

Definitely not Dita

This blog could often be called “Life lessons from Joss Whedon.”Image

I’m not gonna lie to you, readers, this has been an awful year. It’s been an awful year for everyone so I won’t recite the litany of my sorrows but most of the past 8 months has just been a struggle to go through the basic motions of eating, working, keeping a roof over my head. In the world of burlesque I took on way too many things and I burned out hard. To the point where I spent a lot of time thinking about giving up. Giving up plans included everything from moving back in with my parents, moving to the middle of nowhere and trying to be a normal person, selling all my possessions and drinking myself to death in New Orleans, or just straight up dying. I’m not saying that as a cry for help cry…

SmutTalk: Erotica vs. Porn

cropped-joy-forever-cover-mary-back.jpg

So, I’ve been talking with folks about what constitutes erotica, and what constitutes pornography. Not new subjects, and not subjects any argument is going to solve any time soon.

Here, for what it’s worth, is Joseph Campbell talking about James Joyce’s definition of porn (aka “improper art”):

Joyce’s theory of art included what he called “proper art” and “improper art.” To Joyce, proper art has to do with the esthetic (sense) experience. It is static. It is not moving you to do anything. It is in esthetic arrest.

For the static art, Joyce goes to Aquinas, Dante (the model for Joyce’s work), and Aristotle. He goes to Aquinas for beauty – beauty is what pleases.

What he called improper art is kinetic – it moves you with either desire, loathing, or fear for the object represented. Consequently it moves you to action – you are not in esthetic arrest. Art that moves you is either with desire or loathing or fear toward the object or away from the object.

Art that moves you with desire toward the object, Joyce calls pornographic. All advertising is pornographic art. You are not simply enchanted by the object you are beholding. You want it. However, if you look at a Picasso portrait, it certainly doesn’t look like someone you would like to meet, but you still like the picture. It is formally organized and interesting.

Art that repels you, Joyce calls didactic. He says that 90% of all writers use didactic pornographics trying to get you to turn away from something, but applying a chocolate coating that will hold your interest. — Joseph Campbell, “Mythic Worlds, Modern Words”

And here’s what I said this morning to Madeleine Marzio over on The Erotic Writers Group on Google+:

Funny enough, I have been discussing this very subject with another writer, Tess Mackenzie, on her blog (here’s a link). We come at the issue in different ways, I think, but we’ve both narrowed it down, for us, to where the focus is: is it on the people, who happen to be having sex; or is it on the sex, and the people are there as props? If the story centers around the characters and their journeys, that’s erotica. If it centers around act A followed by act B, that’s porn.

At least, that’s how I see it today. 😉

What’s your definition of erotica? Porn?
